Course description

Course overview

This course focuses on developing skills, providing personalised study programmes which will develop employability skills that will be valuable within a work environment and in terms of leading an independent or semi-independent life. Functional skills – Maths, English, ICT, are delivered in a discrete or embedded programme and are fundamental to enabling Further Education progression routes. 

Work tasters and work experience opportunities are explored to enable learners to make informed decisions about future employment aspirations.  You will also have opportunity to put your skills into practice via learner lead enterprise projects. 

What are the course details?

This course gives you a great introduction to skills needed for work. You will develop the personal skills and qualities required of an employee and study vocational qualifications.

Is the course for me?

You will undertake work placement opportunities at College and in the local community together with classroom sessions in a specific vocational area. You can also undertake community placements or get involved in projects to develop team work skills.

Course content

What will I learn?

You will develop essential independent living skills in preparation for attending and travelling to work. Your placements will give you valuable experience to improve your chances of getting a job in the future. There are a variety of vocational areas which we can support students in, to suit all tastes and interests, including sport, horticulture, media, catering and many more in between.

We will also support you to gain qualifications in Functional Skills such as English, Maths and ICT at an appropriate level.

How will I learn?

By getting involved in group and individual work, producing posters and information leaflets/booklets, role play, practical activities and classroom sessions to support your learning. You will work on employability skills to support your work placements. There is an element of supported individual study, where you will use the College’s Study Zone to progress your skills and knowledge.

Future opportunities

What can I progress to?

Students who complete this course can either progress further with their vocational studies and enrol onto our Progression to Work course, or with the support of our employment and transition team, secure work placement opportunities closer to home.
