Carpentry Level 1 at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

The course is designed for those interested in a career in the Construction industry and will also act as an excellent Foundation programme for those who are unsure about which career route in the industry they wish to follow.

You may progress onto a Level 2 Diploma course. Alternatively, you may enter employment directly into the industry returning to study further qualifications on a part time basis.

Course content

The course is 20 hours per week for 36 weeks. It is competence based which means that students are assessed on their practical skills and the related knowledge.

Students will study general aspects of health and safety, the safe use, care and maintenance of tools. Topics include the application of carpentry, ironmongery, basic woodworking joints, timber technology and portable power tools.

In addition to these subjects students will study English either at GCSE or iGCSE. They will also study Maths. Please note that students who come in with a Maths or English GCSE grade at C or above will not be placed on a programme.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of secondary education 4 GCSEs at Grade F or above - including Maths and English Internal diagnostic testing

Further information

In addition to their main programme students will have the chance to take part in site visits giving them the opportunity to see a real construction site and talk to the workers. There is also a college enrichment programme that covers a number of activities and takes place during the lunch hour.
