Painting and Decorating in Basic Construction Level 1 at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College
The course is designed for those interested in a career in the Construction industry, and will also act as an excellent Foundation programme for those who are unsure about which career route in the industry they wish to follow.
You may progress onto a Level 2 Diploma course or, alternatively, you may enter employment directly into the industry returning to study further qualifications on a part time basis.
The course is 20 hours per week for 36 weeks. It is competence based, which means that students are assessed on their practical skills and related knowledge. Assessments include an extended practical assignment which allows students to demonstrate competence in painting and decorating skills, multiple choice unit tests (which assess students supporting knowledge). Students need to be successful in all the assessments in order to pass the course.
Areas of study will include the application of painting and decorating techniques to various backgrounds and surfaces. Students will also study general aspects of health and safety, building construction methods, calculating quantities and the safe use, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and materials.
In addition to these subjects students will study English either at GCSE or iGCSE. They will also study Maths. Please note that students who come in with a Maths or English GCSE grade at C or above will not be placed on a programme.
Successful completion of secondary education 4 GCSEs at Grade E or above - including Maths and English Internal diagnostic testing
In addition to their main programme students will have the chance to take part in site visits giving them the opportunity to see a real construction site and talk to the workers. There is also a college enrichment programme that covers a number of activities and takes place during the lunch hour.
