Biology - A Level at Bolton Sixth Form College
Studying Biology opens up the opportunity to live a thousand lifestyles. Do you want to wear wellies, work outside and be the next David Attenborough? Or would you prefer wearing a white coat, working in a laboratory and finding cures to some of the world’s diseases and illnesses? Would you like to tackle problems working as part of a team or individually? Biology can lead to any of these combinations. Whilst studying Biology you will also develop skills similar to those required of any professional in any other field, i.e. time management, research, presenting and being able to defend your work under scrutiny.
Year one of the specification begins by building on work covered at GCSE, looking at biological molecules, cells and how organisms exchange substances with their environment. This then leads on to studying genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms.
Year two then goes on to build on year one work, covering energy transfers in and between organisms, how organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments. This then leads on to studying genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.
You may have the opportunity to sit a separate AS qualification at the end of the first year. This will be taught alongside the first year of the A Level course but will be a stand-alone qualification.
You will be expected to have at least two GCSEs at Grade B/6 and three GCSEs at Grade C/4 including English Language.
