Access to HE: Education Studies at South Thames College

Course description

This course is ideal if you want to go to university and follow a career in education but don't yet have the academic qualifications. Recognised by universities across the UK, you'll focus on the essentials of teaching and develop your knowledge of core subjects.

Course content

You'll be expected to study extra hours outside of the class in order to manage strict work deadlines and to cope with the workload on this intensive course. Your tutors will help you through your course units and with your UCAS application and university interview. You'll take units in education studies, research, essay writing, IT and two of the following:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • History
  • Literature
  • Linguistics and original writing.

 

If you want to study primary teaching at university you'll take a short placement in a school alongside your course.

Entry requirements

You'll need to show a commitment to teaching and have GCSE A*-C in either English or maths with a minimum grade D in the other. If you're planning to teach in a primary school, you'll also need GCSE science to meet university entry requirements. You should always check the entry requirements for the courses and universities you are interested in progressing onto.

Assessment

You'll be assessed by essays, written assignments, presentations throughout the course and also take exams. You need to gain 60 credits in total, with 45 at Level three, to achieve the qualification.
