Course description

Why should I choose PE?

If you have a keen interest in a range of sports and the various roles associated with them such as performer, leader and official. If you perform, lead and/or officiate regularly, and to a high levelIf you have an interest in pursuing a career in sport or study sport at University. If you are keen to learn about the theory behind sports performance, healthy and active lifestyles and sport development.

Course content

AS – in year one you will study 2 units; Unit 1 Participation in Sport and Recreation and Unit 2 The Critical Sports Performer.

A2 – in year two you will study a further 2 units; Unit 3 Preparation for Optimum Sports Performance and Unit 4 The Developing Sports Performer.

Assessment

AS – Unit 1 The assessment of this unit is through a 1 hour and 30 minute examination paper which is set and marked by Edexcel. The paper will be a question-and-answer booklet, consisting of shortanswer and extended-writing type questions, all of which are compulsory.

AS – Unit 2 is practically and internally assessed in four tasks. Performance will be assessed in two performances as a performer, leader and/or official, one project that examines the roles of performer, leader and official at local and national level and a final analysis of performance.

A2 – Unit 3 The assessment of this unit is through a 2- hour examination paper which is set and marked by Edexcel. The paper will be a question-and-answer booklet, consisting of short-answer and extended writing type questions, all of which are compulsory.

A2 – Unit 4 will be an internally assessed set of tasks that will enable students to develop and progress their practical performance.

Future opportunities

Studying A level PE would provide opportunities for students to pursue a career in the sports industry, sports coaching and sports development as well as enabling them to further their studies at college or university.
