Course description

The course offers you an interesting combination of English Language and English Literature. As well as studying a wide range of plays, poetry and novels you will also have the opportunity to develop your creative and analytical skills in your study of language. You should do this subject if you like writing for different audiences, love reading, and enjoy discussions. You will start by studying a novel and a play. In the creative writing part of the course you develop your writing and analytical skills by producing texts for different audiences. You will also study the language of speech by reading a novel or play and studying the language of spontaneous and planned speech.

Entry requirements

GCSE grade C or above in English is essential.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in English Language and Literature, which could lead onto higher education in English Language and Literature Studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Language and Literature Studies such as a Teacher, Journalist or Author. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
