Business Studies BTEC Diploma at Oaks Park High School

Course description

The 120 credit BTEC Diploma is designed to appeal to students interested in a career in business.
The course gives learners an introduction to and understanding of the business environment, management of resources, marketing and communication - all fundamental to the success of business organisation. The units covered enable a broad and balanced understanding of the core topic areas needed in the business world. Students will study a range of units from market research, accounting and recruitment to law, enabling them to progress to employment or higher education in any of these areas. It is equivalent to two A-Levels.
Students may wish to extend their programme through the study of related A-Levels or Level 3 BTEC in other subjects e.g. Economics or Mathematics, but equally it combines well with Geography, Product Design and Music Production (amongst others). These learning programmes have been developed to allow learners to study related and complimentary qualifications without duplication of content. 
This qualification would suit a combination with most subjects. It offers many transferable skills, particular excellent combinations are Economics, Geography, English, Mathematics and PE.

  • managing a business event,
  • aspects of contract and business law,
  • development planning for a career in business,
  • starting a small business,
  • understanding business ethics. 
All assessments are assignment based and are firmly related to selected local, national and global businesses. Students will be expected to apply theoretical concepts and ideas to specific organisations; these will either be in the form of given information or for which they will need to contact their allocated businesses to research necessary information. The assignments will be related to the twelve units studied.

Entry requirements

C grade GCSE Maths, and either Merit BTEC Business, or C Grade GCSE Business (if studied) 

Students will need to have an enquiring mind and be willing to research and work independently, both in the classroom and in home learning. Personal study time after school will be needed in order to successfully complete assignments on time. Time management is a key skill in the business world and the importance of this is essential to this course. 

Therefore students must be focused, willing to work independently, and able to keep to deadlines.


All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. A minimum of a pass is needed in each of the units in order to be awarded the qualification. There are four pass grades for this qualification; pass, merit, distinction and distinction star. 

Future opportunities

Students can enter the world of work in a number of business related career areas, including marketing, customer service, human resources and finance. Some management training courses are available to these students.
At college/university there are a wide variety of courses available, from pure Business Studies, to courses which integrate other specialisms and/or vocational areas e.g. management in the sport industry or music industry. A Business Studies degree is a good way to get onto a graduate management-training programme with one of the world's top businesses.
