A Level Business Studies at St Thomas More Catholic Academy - Trinity Sixth Form

Course description

Business is front-page news. The way companies operate is under greater scrutiny than ever before, while TV programmes like "The Apprentice" and "Dragon's Den" have raised the profile of business to the next generation.

Business Studies is a broad ranging subject covering a number of topics as diverse as law, finance and business ethics. 

The subject offers students the opportunity to keep career prospects open whilst developing an understanding of business and a range of transferable skills.

  • Making functional decisions: Marketing, Operations People & Finance
  • Making strategic decisions:
    • ​​​​​Swot analysis
    • Assessing and choosing strategies
    • Managing change



Entry requirements

Although the course provides a natural progression from GCSE Business Studies, it is not a pre-requisite. 

However, students must have five GCSE passes at A to C, including Maths & English..


This is a linear course with all exams taken at the end of the two year course.

Component 1:

Business 1 Written paper - 33.3%

2 Hrs-100 marks - 15 MCQs worth 1 mark each, short answer questions worth 35 marks, 2 extended answer questions (each out of a choice of 2) worth 25 marks each.

Component 2:

Business 2 Written paper 33.3%

2 hours - 100 marks - 3 data response question each worth approx 33 marks

Component 3:

Business 3 Written paper 33.3%

2 Hours - 100 marks - one case study consisting of 6 questions.

You could use a variety of media including newspapers, the Internet such as and news apps.

A Level Business Studies is taught at St Thomas More or at St John Fisher sites.
