Music A Level at Paddington Academy

Course description

You’ll enjoy this course if you’ve enjoyed your time studying GCSE Music and want to take your knowledge, understanding and skill in the three main areas of music study (appraising, composition and performing) to the next level.

Course content

Component 1: Appraising music – students will develop their knowledge and understanding of music in this area of the course through the study of a wide variety of musical styles and periods

Component 2: Performance – In this component, students will be assessed on their ability to perform on their chosen instrument, either in an ensemble or solo. The performance can also be completed as a music production if you are a music technology specialist rather than an instrumentalist

Component 3: Composition – students are assessed on their ability to compose music to a brief as well as compose music in a style of their choice

Assessment

Component 1: Appraising music – 40% (exam)
Component 2: Performance – 35% (performance exam)
Component 3: Composition – 25% (coursework)
