Course description

A Level Design and Technology will develop students’ creative skills in the areas of Analytical Research, Product Evaluation, Design and Manufacture. The course also encourages students to develop their independent learning skills, problem solving skills and level of self confidence in the areas of written and visual communication, graphic design and ICT. Students will be making models and prototypes using a variety of materials and techniques. This will be suitable for mass manufacture and use in industry and in industrial design. The AS and A level course will develop a critical understanding of the influences of the processes and products of design activity from an historical and a present day perspective. Developing a cultural and social awareness of design in the environment and its influences. Students’ will learn to apply essential knowledge of understanding and skills of design and design production processes to a range of technological activities and develop an understanding of industrial processes. Develop and sustain their own innovative, creative and design and technology capability, to recognise constraints and to produce high quality products. Assessment The qualification is assessed as follows: A Level-Second Year • Unit 3: Processes and Manufacture-written paper 25% of total A level mark. Product evaluation and development and design. Visual communication and graphic skills. Knowledge of industrial processes in manufacture. Understanding design in the environment and the effect on society. Conservation of natural resources and the use of CAM [Computer Aided Manufacture] and CAD [Computer Aided Design] in the manufacturing and design process. • Unit 4: Coursework: Design folder and a manufactured model and prototype. 25% of total A level mark. Including the effective use of graphics and presentation skills and design development. Testing and product evaluation and safe working practise and use of ICT in the design process.

Entry requirements

for AS level – a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, usually with a Grade B or above in the subject to be taken at AS level or in an associated subject. for A2 level – candidates should normally have obtained a pass at AS level, preferably at grade C or above.

Future opportunities

Employment in architecture, interior, furniture, display and industrial design and engineering and many of the creative and manufacturing industries.After successfully completing the course students would have access to University Degree courses in architecture, interior, furniture, display and industrial design and engineering and many of the creative and manufacturing industries.
