History *FEES PAYABLE* at Canford School

Course description

We offer a choice of two different periods of History: Early Modern and
Modern.
If you have enjoyed your GCSE course on Modern World History, then
the Modern course may be the one for you: it focuses on 19th and 20th
century History and will help you to develop your knowledge of Modern
History; there is little overlap with the GCSE course.
If you would prefer to do an earlier period of History, then our Early
Modern course will give you a good understanding of the Tudor era, a
crucial period in the development of the English system of government,
and in Europe as a whole.
It may even be possible to do one period for AS, then change to the
other for A2 (though it is easier to change from Early Modern to
Modern than the other way round).
Within the Modern AS specification, one set studies Italian Unification,
the other the Origins of the American Civil War, while at A2, one set studies Russian Revolutions 1894-1924, the other The Cold War 1941-
56. However, please note that your choice between Early Modern and
Modern, and your choice of options within the Modern course may be
restricted by your choice of other subjects. Early Modern is only
available in Group 2, Modern in both Group 2 and Group 4 (though
with different topics in each set).
The Historical Interpretations and Investigations unit, which is part of the
A2 course, is entirely examined through Coursework. A leaflet with fuller
details of both courses is available from the History Department.
