Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy Level 1 at Kendal College

Course description

On this programme you will study various aspects of hairdressing, which will include shampooing, conditioning, setting and blow-drying, cutting, perming and colouring.


The qualification and the experience you gain on the course will help you find employment in hair and beauty salons either locally, or further afield; for example, in large department stores, hotels, leisure centres or on board cruise ships. You may also continue with your studies and progress on to the Level 2 Diploma or an apprenticeship.

You will work alongside enthusiastic and experienced staff and use up-to-date facilities and equipment. The department runs a variety of trips throughout the year, for example to Salon International in London and Birmingham Hair UK. Students also have the opportunity to complete in WorldSkills competitions.

This course will develop your customer care, retailing and team working skills. You will learn how to handle money, multi-task and use your own initiative.

This course usually takes place over 3 days.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a ā€˜Cā€™ grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.

Course content

At level 1 you will learn and be assessed on:

  • Shampooing
  • Assisting in the salon
  • Removing colour
  • Preparing work area
  • Plaiting and twisting
  • Day make-up
  • Basic manicure and pedicure
  • Reception
  • Blow drying

You will also learn and develop Level 2 skills in:

  • Setting
  • Cutting
  • Perming
  • Colouring

You will learn via practical demonstrations, hands-on activities and theory sessions.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade C-G

or

Progression from 14-16 programme in Hair & Beauty

Assessment

You will be assessed by means of practical observation of your skills and oral questioning of your underpinning knowledge. In addition you will be assessed through the completion of written assignments, written tests and the production of a portfolio of evidence.

Future opportunities

On completion of this course, you could progress to Level 2 Hairdressing either full time or as an apprentice.

    • The majority of our courses are based at our main site. The College completed a £12.9 million new build project in 2008, which includes reception, conference and seminar suites, hairdressing salons and 250-seat cafe with external balcony. The site also features the stunning Construction and Heritage Centre, which features cutting edge facilities for carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plumbing and electrical installation.

      In October 2010 the College opened the South Lakeland Design Engineering Centre, which has brought engineering back to Kendal College. The Centre, designed in conjunction with local engineering firms including Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Limited, features state of the art computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, including a 3D printer, which prints out solid models directly from CAD Drawings. The college is currently building a new, purpose-built engineering centre which will open in September 2014 and provide new courses in medical science, engineering and sustainable energy.
