Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 at St John Fisher Catholic High School
Cambridge Technicals are nationally recognised vocation qualifications at level 3. They are designed to provide you with a practical task based method of learning. They will help you to develop your practical skills as well as your knowledge of the performing arts industry. Additionally, they will also prepare you for professional employment as well as further study and training post 18.
The assessment for the qualification is task based so you don’t need to take any examinations to pass this qualification.
This is a very enjoyable and challenging course for those students who enjoy performing and sharing their skills with others. There is an expectation that you will be committed to developing skills through private practice and will be prepared to take part in school productions. Furthermore, the completion of a successful portfolio requires a good level of organisation so work can be developed throughout the course.
The course is based on the successful completion of a number of units. There are three mandatory units:-
Unit 1: Professional Practice - Skills Development
In this unit, you have the opportunity to develop your skills through practical work and research. This requires a dedicated approach and you need to be willing to practise on a regular basis.
Unit 2: Professional Practice in Performing Arts
The Creative and Performing Arts industry is complex and multi-faceted. This unit will give you the strategies, attitudes and survival skills for sustaining a career in the Performing Arts industry. Likewise, you will learn to promote yourself and maximise your chance of getting work as a freelance artist.
Unit 3: Community Arts Project
This unit gives you the opportunity to develop and realise a community arts project. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of administration and planning as well as the creative skills and techniques that can be used on a Performing Arts project. Evaluation skills will also be used and developed in relation to this project and this will provide sufficient practice for a career in the Arts.
Additional units are available according to your specialist pathway. Examples of these include:
- Drama improvisation
- Musical Theatre performance
- Dance improvisation
- Urban dance
Singing techniques and performance There is a wide range of over 70 units accommodating performing artists from a large range of specialisms, including music, dance and drama, as well as arts administration and music technology.
The following methods of assessment are considered suitable for these qualifications:
- Observation of practice, including a video or DVD recording.
- Questioning the learner.
- Examining written evidence, such as assignments, tasks and planning.
- Examining evidence from others, such as witness statements.
There are four award levels for this qualification – pass, merit, distinction and distinction* (with distinction* being equivalent to an A* at A2 GCE).
One or more of the following: GCSE Music, Dance, Performing Arts or Drama at grade C or above. In addition any other qualifications in the performing arts such as ABRSM music qualifications, dance and drama award can be considered. Students considering this course need to have a real interest in an area of the performing arts and are likely to have a significant history of performance either in school or in local groups.
Many of our students go on to study professional qualifications at theatre schools such as Art Educational School in London, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and Guildford School of Acting.
