Design Technology - Product Design A/S at Challenge College
Product design is about the creation of new items that people will buy. It includes appearance and function, and needs the balance of science and art for its success. Styling and function are crucial to commercial success, and through product design you will gain a thorough understanding of the processes involved in turning ideas into attractive and useful products. Shape, colour, user perception, usability and sustainablity are just some of the elements you will learn to work with.
Students will learn about the same stages of the design process as a practising designer. These include:
* Identifying a design problem.
* Discussing the requirements of the brief.
* Researching factors such as target market, design styles, fashions and trends.
* Creating ideas and developing them into a finished design.
* Using CAD and models to visualise the product.
* Planning and manufacturing the product (or Prototype).
* Evaluating the final outcome.
This will be done through a range of different design briefs that will build up to create a design portfolio that will be submitted for assessment. Along side this students will under take a range of theory based assignments.
At least four Gcse at grades A* - C one of which needs to include a minimum C grade in Technology - graphics, textiles, food or product design
A keen interest in design
In the first year of the course you will complete a number of units of work , completion of these results in an AS qualification. These units are:
Materials, Components & Application (theory focused exam)
Learning Through Designing and Making-- Design Portfolio (coursework)
You can choose to continue on with this course on to A2 and ultimately receive an A-Level at Product Design. This would be suitable for a wide range of design based jobs.
