Course description

There are six designated religions: Buddhism Christianity Hinduism Islam Judaism
Sikhism.

Course content

Paper 1: Chosen religion and philosophy
Religion:
• God or Ultimate Reality
• Life after death
• Underpinning sources of religious authority
• The challenge from science
• The nature and role of religion

Philosophy:
• Arguments for the existence of God
• Evil
• Religious Experience
• Religious Language
• Miracles
• Self, death and the afterlife

Paper 2 Chosen religion, ethics and society
Religion:
• Key moral principles
• Religious identity
• Religion and sexual identity
• Religious Pluralism
 
Ethics and Society:
• Ethical theories
• Issues of human life and death
• Issues of animal life and death
• Introduction to meta ethics
• Free will and moral responsibility
• Conscience.
• Bentham and Kant.
• Two year teaching programme

linear structure of the course.

 

Assessment

A2 Assessment
A course with terminal assessment only
• No modules
• If the student wishes to improve their grade they must re-sit both papers at the end of
the next academic year
2 x 3 hour A level papers
• Use of both structured and unstructured questions at A level

Future opportunities

A Religious Studies degree will give students the opportunity to think, reflect, listen, debate and develop a range of skills that are highly valued by employers when they graduate. Graduates in disciplines such as philosophy, Ethics, Theology and
Religion are successful in the job market and tend to go into areas such as teaching, law, the media, marketing, human resources, social concern and the caring professions. Some will also go on to undertake further study and research in pursuit of higher degrees.
