Agriculture Technical Baccalaureate at Reaseheath College

Course description

The Technical Baccalaureate is a government backed programme that is designed for talented individuals who wish to pursue a career within the field of agriculture.

The ‘Tech Bacc’ enables you to study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture alongside a Level 3 Maths qualification and extended industry project. In addition you will also complete a work placement with an employer in your vocational area of interest.

The course is designed for students who can demonstrate academic ability and a passion for the agriculture industry, and will provide a challenging and exciting opportunity to study this discipline at level 3.

The Tech Bacc provides an excellent foundation for progression onto specialist courses at university as it is equivalent to 4.5 A-Levels but can also provide a direct pathway into employment within the agricultural industry or onto Higher Apprenticeships.

You will gain:

  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Level 3 Extended Project qualification

Successful completion of these 3 elements will result in the awarding of the Technical Baccalaureate performance measure.

Course content

Year 1

  • Understand livestock production
  • Crop production
  • Business management
  • Animal anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding machinery operations
  • Undertaking pig production
  • Understand the principles of plant and soil science
  • Undertake estate skills
  • Manage agricultural environments
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Undertake an extended project

You will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications that support industry skills development.

Year 2

  • Sandwich year placement (full 12 months)

This is optional, as this course can be completed over a 2 year period.

Year 3

For year 3 of the programme, there is an option to specialise in Dairy Herd management, Beef and Sheep management or arable crop management.

Modules include:

  • Business planning
  • Forage crop management
  • Understand the use of spreaders and sprayers
  • Understand and promote animal health
  • Undertake dairy production
  • Undertake beef production
  • Undertake sheep production
  • Understanding root crop and field vegetable production
  • Grassland management
  • Investigative project
  • Understanding livestock breeding and nutrition
  • Level 3 Core Maths
  • Undertake an extended project

You will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications that support industry skills development.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grades A – C or above to include English, Maths and Science at grade B, or
  • Relevant Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above with GCSE grade B in Maths and English. Those with other level 2 qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis

Further information

Depending on the route chosen – all students complete an industry based placement and will be assigned an ‘Industry Mentor’ who will provide 1:1 support and guidance during your course programme.

This will help you to develop the knowledge, experience and skills that will best prepare you for a career in the agriculture industry.

If a sandwich year placement is undertaken (year 2 of the programme) this is for 12 months.

    • You will be studying in the beautiful, rural setting of Cheshire, one mile from the market town of Nantwich with good connections to Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Chester. 

      The Reaseheath campus itself is small enough to retain its friendly, family atmosphere, but large enough for you to be able to mix with lots of groups of students. 

      Our front lawn is great to sit out on during the summer and the College lake has much wildlife to watch. 

      Over the past few years we have invested over £50 million in our campus to give you the best possible environment for learning. 

      A further £30 million investment is planned for the campus including a £6 million advanced agricultural technology and engineering facility, new halls of residence and new sporting facilities.
