BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music at Bournville College

Course description

Our Level 3 Music pathway allows you to improve your skills as a musician, learning new styles of music and improving your ability to play with groups of musicians. Alongside the live work you will also learn how to write and produce music, backed-up with theoretical elements relating to the music business, music technology and music theory.

Course content

The course is designed around a number of music projects, some of these will be performances, others compositions or songs and some assignment work too. The course is split into units, including five core units:
Aural Perception Skills
Major Music Project (double value unit)
Music and Society
The Sound and Music Industry

Plus 14 optional units:
Arranging Music
Working with Music Notation Packages
Composing Music
Sequencing Systems and Techniques
Music Events Management

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English and maths (and preferably music). BTEC First Diploma (Merit or Distinction) together with a grade C in English and maths. All applicants must have a good reference. All applicants must pass an audition.


Assessment is based on the building of a portfolio of work that achieves a number of assessment criteria stipulated by the awarding body, EDEXCEL.  The work is assessed to Pass, Merit and Distinction standards both at assignment level and unit level to determine an overall grade for the course.

Future opportunities

Progression is on to University or HND courses, also into relevant areas of the music industry which will include careers within the recording, live music, publishing, and management sectors.
