Economics A Level at St Philomena's Catholic High School for Girls

Course description

With a foundation in logic this course complements a wide variety of subjects including History, Geography, Government and Politics, Maths and Languages. Universities and employers consider this a ‘numerate’ discipline.

Course content

AS Units

  • Unit 1: The Operation of Markets and Market Failure (Microeconomics)
  • Unit 2: The National Economy in a global context (Macroeconomics)

A2 Units

  • Unit 3: Individuals, Firms, Markets and Market Failure (Microeconomics)
  • Unit 4: The National and International Economy (Macroeconomics)

Entry requirements

Grade B GCSE Economics if taken and Grade A GCSE Mathematics or Grade B GCSE Business Studies if taken and Grade A GCSE Mathematics Grade A Mathematics required if neither Business Studies or Economics have been taken. GCSE English (at Grade C or above) is required

Assessment

AS Units

  • Unit 1: The Operation of Markets and Market Failure (Microeconomics)
  • Unit 2: The National Economy in a global context (Macroeconomics)
  • Each of the above is assessed by one paper (total 2 papers)

A2 Units

  • Unit 3: Individuals, Firms, Markets and Market Failure (Microeconomics)
  • Unit 4: The National and International Economy (Macroeconomics)
  • The A2 exam covers these and includes the AS content (total 3 papers)

Students are able to access a range of commerce related courses including Economics itself, business in all its guises, Accounting and Law.
