English Literature A Level (Spec A) at Forest Hill School - Sydenham and Forest Hill Sixth Form

Course description

In this course you will not only study great literature, but also the history of literature. You will explore the links between texts and society and how texts connect with their times.

Course content

Year 12

The study of A Level English Literature is about students developing their critical and comparative understanding of literature. It involves the reading of texts from the major literary genres: prose, poetry and drama.

Students undertake a close study of at least eight texts over the 2 years including pre-1900 works, a Shakespeare play and a post-2000 work.

In the first year of the course students will study the theme of Love Through the Ages and will study:

  • One Shakespeare play from a set list,
  • one poetry text
  • two prose texts.

Year 13

The full A level course develops the skills and areas of study from Year 12.

 

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE English Language and English Literature.

Minimum point score of 38 including Maths and English at grade 4 at GCSE. This is equivalent to 4B and 4C grades overall at GCSE. Students will also need to achieve the subject specific criteria below:

Assessment

The course is assessed is by examination and will include questions on the core texts studied in class and unseen texts.

  • Paper 1: Love through the ages: 3 texts as above. The exam will include 2 unseen poems. (Written exam: 3 hours - 40% of qualification)
  • Paper 2: Texts in shared contexts. Students will study 3 texts and the examination will include an unseen extract. (Written exam: 2hours 3 minutes – 40% of qualification)
  • Coursework: A comparative critical study of 2 texts, at least one of which must have been written pre- 1900. One extended essay (2500 words) and a bibliography). (20% of qualification
