BTEC Extended Diploma Music Technology (Level 3) at Burton and South Derbyshire College

Course description

This course is aimed at students entering or about to enter employment in the Music Industry or allied sectors and is the equivalent of 3 A Levels allowing for progression onto Higher Education. Students will develop a range of skills suitable for local and national employers and sponsoring agents. A total of 18 units will be studied across two years including Sequencing System Techniques, Music Production Techniques, Live Sound Techniques, Music Technology in Performance, Acoustics, Music and Sound for the Moving Image and the Music Industry. On successful completion of the course the students will have a variety of skills to apply effectively in a range of music industry roles or proceed onto Higher Education. The course is highly vocational where students will complete assignments in challenging, real world scenarios, creating individual work projects or work in groups. The course will require learners to be confident with independent research and written assignments. A major project will ensure all students complete the course with a CD portfolio demonstrating successful production skills using a range of industry standard equipment including Cubase, Reason and a variety of hardware equipment.

Entry requirements

• Minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade C or better (of which one subject may be specified at grade C) including either English Language or Maths at GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent)*; or • Pass at NVQ Level 2 and either English Language or Maths at GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent); or • Pass at BTEC Diploma and either English Language or Maths at GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent). The College has the discretion to determine if 4 or 5 GCSE’s will be the entry standards for a Qualification. • A formal interview where they should bring records of previous grades and show a high level of motivation to pursue a career in the Music Industry • Evidence of any previous recording experience including CD’s of reference. • Evidence of high levels of attendance from previous learning programmes.

Future opportunities

• Foundation Degree or Undergraduate Degree. • Careers in the Music Industry such as Studio or Live Sound Engineer, Producer, Sound Operators in Radio/TV/Film /Theatre, Audio Technician, Studio and Artist Management.
