Course description

Do you really enjoy science but don’t want to do A Levels? If you enjoy learning by doing experiments, going on visits to laboratories and industrial plants and attending exciting talks by experts and working scientists, then this study programme is for you. There is a large range of units available which could lead a variety of careers.

Course content

The Extended Diploma in Applied Science is highly rewarding and provides a good alternative to Science AS/A2 Level. It encompasses all three science disciplines; is equivalent to three A Levels and is a valid progression route to university. This 2 year qualification consists of studying thirteen units and is taught with an emphasis on laboratory-based practical assignments, supported by self-study, presentations, group work, discussion and educational visits. Some of the core units include: Science, Practical Scientific Techniques, Science Investigation Skills, Laboratory Techniques and their Application in Industry, Principles and Applications of Science, Vocational Investigative Project, Contemporary Issues in Science. It is essential that students have the ability to meet assessment deadlines. The Couse also has 4 units with external exams set by BTEC externally. You will be encouraged to complete work experience in a scientific role and we will visit places of work to prepare you for your chosen career path. Work experience is undertaken throughout the year.

Entry requirements

At least 4 GCSEs at Grade C or grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science or the successful completion of Level 2 Diploma in Science & Technology at merit level with English Language and Maths.

Tuition Costs

Future opportunities

Students can progress into Higher Education in subjects such as Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering and Pharmacology. Students aspiring to do Medicine or Dentistry should follow the A level route. Alternatively, students may choose to enter into employment within science organisations which could include science technicians in hospitals or production plants, research work, and work in chemistry or biotechnology fields
