Course description

The first year of the course introduces you to how drama and theatre can work in practice. The course is split up into various areas of assessment: practical workshops, coursework, group performance and solo performance.

In the first year of this course you will work with your group on various practical projects and on your own, developing your skills as a theatre practitioner and performer.

Unit 1: You will explore two contrasting play texts in a workshop situation.Through a series of practical and seminar style workshops you will explore the playwrights use of language, form and structure, plot, intention, character, style and use of theatrical devices. You will also study and develop your understanding of the social and historical context for each text. This unit is designed to build and develop your understanding of theatre and introduce you to some of the key ideas and concepts of important theatre practitioners which may include Stanislavsky, Artaud and Brecht.

Unit 2 is a performance module. You will take part in a full scale theatre production which will be directed by your class teacher. You will perform the play to a public audience and examiner before the Easter holidays. You will have the opportunity to create, develop and sustain a role in performance, rehearse and become part of a theatre company. You will be assessed on your acting skills.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C including English and Mathematics with a B grade in GCSE Drama.
