Sociology at Cardinal Newman Catholic School

Course description

Generations of students have found that Sociology makes them look at the world in new and exciting ways. The kind of society we are born into decides our language, dress codes, food, religion and the many everyday rituals and behaviours we practise. If you want to find out how we are shaped by the society we are born into, then this subject is for you. Sociology stimulates our thinking to look beyond appearances. It helps us develop a critical awareness, and learn about issues we may not have thought about before, such as class, gender and race inequalities.

Sociology shows us how institutions like the family, education, the criminal justice system, global development and the environment affect each one of us. Sociology combines well with all AS subjects and is valuable for many careers; government, commerce, social work, journalism, the media, law and market research to name but a few.
