French A Level at Baines High School

Course description

A-Level French helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in French and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where French is spoken. It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context.  This four-unit specification requires students to develop their ability to write and speak in French with accurate grammar and syntax for a range of purposes and to understand written or spoken French in a variety of contexts and genres.

Course content

AS Topics:

  • Popular Culture  Cinema, Music, Fashion/trends
  • Healthy Living/Lifestyle – Sport/exercise, Health and well-being, Holidays
  • Family/Relationships  Relationships within the family, Friendships, Marriage/partnerships

A2 Topics:

  • Environment  Pollution, Energy, Protecting the planet
  • The Multicultural Society  Immigration, Integration, Racism
  • Contemporary Social Issues – Wealth and poverty, Law and order, Impact of scientific and technological progress
  • Cultural Topics  A target language-speaking region/community, A period of 20th century history from a target language-speaking country/community, An author from a target language-speaking country/community, A dramatist or poet from a target language-speaking country/community, A director, architect, musician or painter from a target language-speaking country/community

Assessment

AS Examinations

Unit 1

  • Listening, Reading and Writing
  • 2 hours 70% of the total AS marks 35% of the total A-level marks

Unit 2

  • Speaking (discussion of a stimulus card and general conversation)
  • 35 minutes (including 20 minutes preparation time) 30% of the total AS marks 15% of the total A-level marks

 

A2 Examinations

Unit 3

  • Listening, Reading, Translating and Writing
  • 2.5 hours 35% of the total A-level marks

Unit 4

  • Speaking (a debate card and discussion of cultural topics studied)
  • 35 minutes (including 20 minutes preparation time) 15% of the total A-level marks
