Hairdressing (Combined Hair Types) Advanced Diploma at Newham College of Further Education

Course description

You will learn how to monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon from a managerial point of view. You will be taught advanced colouring and colour correction, perming, cutting and styling skills as well as techniques and skills for Creative hairdressing. You will be encouraged to be more creative and use these skills to individualise looks and high fashion techniques to suit the clients. You will also study aspects of working within the hairdressing industry to enable you to appreciate work ethics, some employment law and performance reviews to improve your personal development etc. You will also cover areas related to the effective running of a salon from a business perspective and Human resource management 16-18yrs learners will also study English and maths to support your main course. Work Experience opportunity As part of the programme you will conduct a work placement in a hair salon. This will allow you to apply your theoretical knowledge into a practical work setting. Enrichment Activities A range of Enrichment activities are incorporated within the programme. 

Examples of Enrichment activities conducted are lectures by guest speakers from leading stylists and salon managers Visits to various industry leaders, trade events or seminars. You will have an opportunity to participate in internal and external events where you will be able to show case your skills You will take part in our end of year event where you will be given the opportunity to use your creative design skills complete a look for the catwalk. I-Learning Sessions This is additional time embedded in your programme for your study to promote independent learning. This time is used to work through assignments, complete homework activities and conduct wider reading and research. Support Tutorials (16-18 only) Group and one to one tutorials are set up on the programme to further assist you with successfully completing the course and provide you with professional guidance and support throughout the course. Personal Learning Plan Sessions A course tutor will be allocated to you on the programme. Your course tutor will be working with you to set realistic targets that will enable you to achieve your goals. Your targets will be monitored weekly by your tutor and yourself and actions plans and support put in place to assist you in achieving your targets

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade A-C including English and Maths You must have a NVQ or VRQ Level 2 in Hairdressing, a VRQ level 3 hairdressing or relevant industrial experience

  • You must be working in a salon as a stylist
  • You need to enjoy working with people

Have good communication skills, along with a good level of written and spoken English You will be invited to the college for an initial assessment to determine your suitability for the course. You must be willing to purchase a professional kit and a uniform for this course.
