Government & Politics AS/A Level at Alexandra Park School

Course description

This course 2 will teach you about political issues, institutions and processes in the UK and the USA. At AS level students study various aspects of UK politics. These include the workings of Parliament, the role of the Judiciary and the powers of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and Members of Parliament. In addition students will gain an insight into the importance of parties, influence of pressure groups and various electoral processes.

At A2  students will follow similar paths in developing knowledge and understanding of American politics, focusing on electoral processes and issues as well as the workings of the branches of the Federal Government and the role of the people in political activity. This course will appeal to students who enjoy political debate and like putting forward a well-argued case, wish to improve their analytical skills and want to investigate political opinions and make up their own minds.

Course content

Students will study Units 1 and 2 concurrently, and will sit examinations for both in the summer of Year 12. Exams for units 3 and 4 will be sat in the summer of Year 13.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements although students will be expected to have secured A to C passes in English GCSE and other relevant humanities subjects (for example History, Geography, RS).
