Business Studies - Btec Extended Certificate Level 3 at Alexandra Park School
This qualification has been developed to ensure that it supports progression to higher education and is also suitable for learners planning to enter employment directly in the business sector. The learning programme covers the areas of marketing, finance, human resources and the business environments that businesses operate within.
The Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Business is made up of 4 units that are completed over 2 years. In the first year, one unit will be internally assessed through assignments. The other unit will contain a synoptic task set and externally assessed by the exam board. This task will be based on content from across the first year and will be completed during a supervised assessment period. In the second year of the course, there will be another internally assessed unit and there is a final unit that will be assessed externally through an exam. The Extended Certificate – the full two year qualification - is broadly equivalent to one A level, whilst completion of the first year of the course will lead to a Certificate, which is equivalent to 0.5 of an A-level.
Students wishing to take the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business should have achieved a Grade C or above in GCSE English and GCSE Maths. Students that have previously studied Business Studies should also have achieved at least a grade C or above at GCSE level or a Merit or above on a BTEC Level 2 course.
Unit 1 will be internally assessed through a series of activities, tasks and assignments
Unit 2 is assessed under supervised conditions. Learners will be provided with a case study two weeks prior to a supervised assessment period in order to carry out research.
During the supervised assessment period, learners will be required to complete a task that will prepare a marketing campaign for a given product or service. The assessment period is 3 hours.
Unit 3 is assessed by a written examination set by Pearson. The examination will be 2 hours in length. The number of marks for the examination is 100.
Unit 8 will be interally assessed through a series of activities, tasks and assignments.
This course will support entry to many higher education courses, depending on the other qualifications learners have taken. Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to use critical thinking, work collaboratively, manage their own time and to apply expert and creative solutions – all skills that are needed for further study and employment in a wide range of industries. It is well regarded in industries such as marketing, information technology, advertising, publishing, public relations - almost any industry, because everyone works for or owns a business!
