Performing Arts (Dance or Drama) AS/A Level at Fitzharrys School

Course description

This is a subject which is similar to a legacy A level. This means that the result in Yr.1 contributes 50% to the overall marks, the second 50% coming from the units studied in year 2.

Course content

AS

This course allows students to follow a single pathway in Dance or Drama or Production. Alternatively you can combine a mixture of the above depending on the student’s skills and interest, below are the core units but these can interchange with a host of optional units depending on the interest of the students.
Unit 1 Skills development in Performing Arts
Unit 2 Professional practice in Performing Arts
Unit 3 Community arts project
These are all coursework units, delivered in a practical way, students will need to keep a portfolio of evidence and have recordings via digital media.

A2

Unit 5: Business of the Performing Arts
Unit 6: Performance workshop
Unit 8: Contemporary performance
These are all coursework units, delivered in a practical way, students will need to keep a portfolio of evidence and have recordings via digital media.

• Self-motivation & self-discipline.
• Interest in the Performing Arts, theatre, theatre design
• Independent learning and self-organisation
• Good research & observational skills
• Problem solving
• Reviewing and modifying
• Critical analysis

Interest in History, psychology, business and social context

Assessment

All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. Students are assessed through their practical skills development, performance outcomes, portfolio, digital evidence, extended research investigations and presentations.

This course is an excellent starting point for university courses including Dance, Drama, Theatre Production, History, Media, Journalism, Politics, English, Business studies; or for careers in theatre, media, performance, teaching, journalism, politics, drama therapy, film, television, arts administration, business

Further information

The whole course is delivered in a practical way, developing your professional skill base in a vocational approach. There will be links and workshops from professionals and industry based sessions. All units are coursework based and will require research, professional investigation and the outcomes will be linked to performances based on which pathway you choose to follow.
