Textiles at The Parker E-act Academy
Textiles enables students to experience a variety of decorative and constructional skills related to fashion, interior design and any items made in textiles. To encourage the use and application of ICT for research, graphical and presentation techniques, CAD/CAM.The groups are mixed ability and students work to develop specific skills in their chosen area of textile interest, and to gain an understanding of textile manufacturing. Homework is set on an irregular basis, but often in the form of a continuing piece of practical work or extension.
Over the 2 years students work invididually and in groups on mini practical projects. The first two terms introduce the students to fibres and fabrics, a varierty of `hands on` skills and art techniques used in the decoration and construction of materials such as felt making, `free machining`, applique, computer aided design and machinery. In terms 2 and 3 they work to a set design brief and produce a mini design and make project culminating in a finished unique decorated hat, bag, tie etc. This project incorporates most aspects of the required coursework task such as research techniques, designing, prototype/pattern draughting, trialling decorative techniques, construction methods, making, testing and evaluation. This enables the students to gain an understanding of the required design process and enhance their textile skills. At the start of term 4 (Yr 10) students commence their assessed coursework design and make task which is worth 60% of the final grade. This will be worked on until completion in term 4 (Yr 11).They are able to choose their own design brief from textiles relating to fashion clothing or interior design or educational playmats etc - in fact anything that can be made in textiles. They will produce a unique design and make it. For the 2 hour written and design examination worth 40% of the final grade, students are given a theme to research and prepare weeks in advance of the examination.
