Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at South Axholme Academy

Course description

Drama and Theatre will appeal to students who have a passion for the arts and a genuine interest in the history of Theatre.

Course content

AS: One complete and substantial performance text and two key extracts from two different texts

- Students study the work of one influential theatre practitioner.
- Students participate in at least one performance from a text studied.

A Level: Two complete and substantial performance texts and three key extracts from three different texts.

- Students study the work of two influential theatre practitioners.
- Students participate in two performances, one devised and one from a text studied.

Entry requirements

This is an excellent course for students who have Expressive Arts, Performing Arts or Drama at a grade C or above, or a background in school productions or amateur theatre groups. Students must visit theatre productions both with school and independently. Students will need to get involved in school productions. An interest in theatre and performance is essential as is the ability to work independently on research and analysis.

Assessment

The AS and A levels in Drama and Theatre will be assessed through a combination of 40% written exam and 60% assessment.

Future opportunities

Many universities recognise and value transferable skills developed throughout the course eg: team building, negotiation and problem solving.

Having studied Drama and Theatre, students will also be able to access arts based degree courses or those geared towards working in arts administration. It can also provide a strong grounding for entry to drama colleges. Long term it can lead to working in aspects of the entertainment industry.
