IT (Network Systems and Support) Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Hertford Regional College

Course description

Are you the type of person who likes to know how computers work and what to do if they go wrong? If the answer is yes then this course is for you. You will develop computer networking, IT support and trouble shooting skills to enable you to gain employment as a technical support or network technician within the ICT field. You will build a computer installing all of the components and you will set up computer networks. This BTEC qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and successful completion will allow you to progress on to Year 2 and achieve the Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Course content

Entry requirements

  • 200 GCSE entry points with English and/or Maths at Grade C or above.
  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma IT (or equivalent) at Merit or above with English and/or Maths GCSE at Grade C or above.
  • BTEC First Diploma (or equivalent) at Merit or above with Fuctional Skills in English and/or Maths at Level 2.
  • You will need to demonstrate a keen interest in the computer industry and be well motivated and enthusiastic.

Assessment

Each unit will be assessed using a variety of methods which may include: reports, presentations, vlogs, podcasts, practical activities, discussions, quizzes.

Financial information

Free to those under 19 on 31st August 2016. If you are 19 or over on 31st August 2016, have been a permanent resident in the EU for the last three years, and are a fee paying new entrant you will pay £1500 tuition fee (this was the fee for 2015/16 and could be subject to change for 2016/17). However, fee paying students continuing on the same course for a second year will be charged £1500 tuition fee (this was the fee for 2015/16 and could be subject to change for 2016/17). You will be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee, materials fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable. For these costs please contact our Information Centre.

Additional Activities 

  • Functional Skills/GCSE English/Maths if not previously achieved, including an external assessment (compulsory).
  • Weekly group tutorials with a variety of activities and guest speakers based on the Every Child Matters themes.  All of which are designed to help produce well rounded individuals ready for university and/or work at the end of the course (compulsory).

What will I need? 

Note taking stationery and a memory stick.

BTEC course text book Year 1 (approximately £22).

This course requires the construction of a computer and there will be the option to use new college purchased components, which are charged to yourself at current market values, and then the completed computer becomes your property to take home. Alternatively you can use older, reused components from college supplies and these will remain college property.

      Trains: The National Express East Anglia Service provides services from Broxbourne and Cheshunt stations to London Liverpool Street, Tottenham Hale, Waltham Cross, Enfield Lock, Harlow, Sawbridgeworth, Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted.

      Parking: There are limited car parking spaces on site.
