Course description

Film Studies is designed to deepen student’s appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of film, the major art form of the twentieth century. Students will build upon their existing knowledge of film - their cineliteracy - and engage with a wide range of film texts. They will develop their skills of observation and critical analysis alongside their creativity and practical skills in both audio visual and written forms. Students will consider the historical development of film, notions of fandom, global film culture and the dominance of Hollywood. The course will also look into issues of audience and spectatorship, genre and authorship. Students will research the relationships between the production and consumption of film, stars systems, finance and national and international diversity. The course aims to enable students to develop informed opinion and understand a range of stylistic features through the exploration of cinematic expression and critical theories relating to the viewing and making of film. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Media or English, to prepare for higher education in related courses or more general higher education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to film such as working within a Film or TV Crew. The course also helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and production industries.
