Further Mathematics at Uplands Community College School Sixth Form

Course description

The Further Mathematics AS Level course develops further the work covered in the normal Mathematics A Level, increasing the depth and variety of topics covered.  This gives a broad base in Mathematics for those taking Mathematics, Science or Engineering at University.  Further Mathematics is a separate subject and must be taken alongside the normal Mathematics A Level.  There is some flexibility in the units chosen in this course.

This subject combines well with Science.  Always impressive on UCAS applications, Further Mathematics marks students out as top candidates and as such is highly favoured by Universities for Mathematics, Engineering and Physics courses.  For many Universities it is a prerequisite for acceptance.

Course content

There is a significant emphasis upon explanatory approaches to learning through discussion and the use of mathematical modelling and problem solving.  In addition, lessons combine explanations of concepts and techniques covered, with the opportunity for students to work individually and cooperatively to consolidate their understanding.

Computer software, graphic calculators and information from the Internet are increasingly being used to help discover and illustrate new ideas in Mathematics.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C grades at GCSE.  Students will also need to be studying A Level Mathematics alongside this and have an exceptional grasp of algebra.
