Applied Science at The Heath School

Course content

The GNVQ in Science at The Heath is intended for students who wish to develop their understanding, knowledge and skills of science through experiencing the activities carried out by scientists.  This course will provide students with an introduction to the science industry and related services, enabling them to investigate a range of areas of study. The practice of science promotes debate on many economic, social and environmental issues. Students will have the opportunities to address these in particular units.  The specific aims of the course are to provides students with opportunities to:  • acquire a body of scientific knowledge and an understanding of some important scientific ideas • develop experimental and investigative abilities • develop skills in laboratory procedures and techniques • use scientific knowledge and understanding to evaluate the effects of some applications of science on health and on the quality of life • relate scientific knowledge and understanding to the care of living things and of the environment • develop an understanding of some of the important technological and environmental applications of science and of the economic, ethical and social implications of these • investigate a range of areas within the science and related industries • acquire knowledge, understanding and skills required for future employment in science • be aware of the progression routes within the National Qualifications Framework • enter employment in science or continue with further education • develop an interest in and enjoyment of the vocational area.


Through this course students will:  • carry out experiments, investigations and practical procedures in which they make plans, follow procedures, take measurements and observations, organise and present their results and draw conclusions  • recognise, recall and use scientific knowledge gained throughout the course • communicate observations and ideas using scientific and technical vocabulary • make decisions based on simple scientific information • develop knowledge, and understand of the use of science in the work place appropriate to level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework • have the opportunity to acquire knowledge by practical application in real work situations • use imaginative and critical thinking in applying knowledge to science situations and problems.
