Applied Science AS/A Level (OCR) at Brooksbank School Sports College (The)

Course description

This is a course designed for students who wish to continue studying Science after GCSE, but are looking for a more general qualification.This A Level course is offered as a Single or Double Award which is equivalent to one or two A levels. 

Applied Science A Level requires you to do a lot of independent work. It develops your independent research skills and, as a result, prepares you well for working at university. It will develop your skills for finding evidence and data as well as giving you lots of experience in carrying out different practical techniques.

Through the units covered in AS Single, students study health and safety at work. These skills can be applied to any job or university course in the future.

During AS, there will be opportunities to visit different businesses that use Science, such as,Coca Cola. At A2, students use a visit to Malham Tarn Field Studies Centre as a context for their coursework.

Course content

Applied Science can be studied as a Single or a Double option so you can choose a course which best suits your needs.

AS

Single Award : Topics covered include a Human Biology exam as well as two coursework based units covering Science in the workplace and practical Chemistry skills.

Double Award : covers all the above as well as two further coursework units; Forensics and Chemicals for a purpose. It also invovles an additional examined unit; Cells & Molecules.

A2

Single Award : Includes two coursework units; Investigating a Scientist's Work and an Ecology investigation. It also involves an examined unit; Working Waves.

Double Award : covers all the above as well as two further coursework units; Biotechnology and Synthesising Organic Chemicals. It also involves an additional examined unit; Sampling, Testing and Processing. 

Entry requirements

In order to follow a level three course you must have at least five GCSE passes at A* - C or equivalent.

To study this course you must include:

  • grade C GCSE English Language
  • grade C GCSE  Science or BC in Dual Award/Applied Science
  • plus at least 3 other subjects

Please note we also require students to continue to study GCSE Mathematics until at least a grade C is achieved.

Double Award as single award plus:

  • One Exam - Cell & Molecules
  • Two further Coursework units

A2

Single Award

  • One exam - Working Waves
  • Two Coursework units

Double Award as single award plus:

  • One exam - SamplingTesting & Processing
  • Two Coursework units

 

Financial information

Sixth Form Bursary

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is available at Brooksbank School to help support those young people who face the greatest barriers in continuing their education to Post-16. All applications are welcome and must meet certain eligibility criteria, details of which can be found on the main school website.

Future opportunities

This course covers the whole range of sciences and could be taken to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology and Physics, which could lead you onto higher education in science-related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Science Technician or Teacher. Students have also gone on to take up careers in the armed services, sports sciences, child care, forensics and ICT. However, if you are thinking of entering the job market, the many skills gained whilst studying this course are highly regarded by most employers.

Students progress to the A2 year after successful completion of the AS year.
