Spa Therapy Diploma Level 3 at St Helens College

Course description

This course is suitable for those who wish to expand their skills and knowledge and pursue a career as an employed spa therapist.

You will develop your understanding of anatomy and physiology, how to successfully promote and sell retail products, how to provide cover massage, heat and hydrotherapy, body wrapping, holistic facial, manicure and pedicure processes, as well as understand the history and origins of massage therapies.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Body wraps
  • Steam, sauna and hydrotherapy
  • Spa pedicure
  • Spa manicure
  • Promote and sell products and services
  • Holistic facial treatments
  • Client care and consultation
  • Anatomy and physiology for the face and body systems
  • Swedish massage
  • History and origins of massage therapies
  • Health and safety in the salon

There is also an opportunity to complete additional units including, Thai stamp massage, stone therapy and Indian head massage.

Entry requirements

You should have a level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or equivalent.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed through ongoing practical observations carried out within a realistic working environment, portfolio evidence, external examinations and a graded synoptic assessment.

Financial information

What are the course fees?


If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the necessary skills and knowledge to enter employment. You may choose to work in a day spa, luxury hotel, at home and abroad in resorts, cruise liners or even health clubs.

Alternatively, you might decide to continue your studies at a higher level by progressing onto the FdA in Spa Therapies and Management or HNC in Hair and Beauty Management.

Further information

As part of this programme you are required to wear a uniform. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from a recommended supplier. You may be eligible for financial support to cover these costs.
