Spanish, AQA at Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre

Course description

The first year of the course is designed to build on the language skills you have acquired at GCSE. In the second year you will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of the culture of Spain.

Studying a language at A level will give you practical skills as well as providing a basis for further study.

We will expect you to be keen to develop your skills and be increasingly independent in your studies. Motivation, commitment and enthusiasm for the subject are essential.

Course content

At AS the topics covered include:

  • Media (television, advertising, communication technology)
  • Popular culture (cinema, music, fashion and trends)
  • Healthy living and lifestyle (sport/exercise, health and well-being, holidays)
  • Family and relationships (relationships within the family, friendships, marriage and partnerships)

At A2 you will study the following topics:

  • The Multicultural society (immigration, integration and racism)
  • The Environment (pollution, energy and protecting the planet)
  • Contemporary social issues such as wealth and poverty and law and order

In addition, you will study two further cultural topics from a choice of literature, theatre, art, history or a regional study.

Entry requirements

At least 4 passes at grade C or above are required, plus one at grade B. These passes must be in separate subjects. All students studying A levels must have at least a grade C in English Language.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Spanish, which could lead you onto higher education to study Spanish, Languages or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job requiring a knowledge of Spanish or Languages such as a Teacher, Translator, or you may wish to use your Spanish to study or work over in Spain. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the travel and tourism sector.
