Information Technology A Level at Havant Sixth form College
This qualification is equivalent to an A Level. It is designed for learners who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of the principles of IT, global information systems and cyber security, and develop practical IT skills in a range of software applications.
This highly practical course will give you the IT skills businesses and employers are really looking for. It’s accepted by universities for entry onto all kinds of IT related courses, including information systems management, internet technology and teacher-training courses with IT as a specialist subject. For some students though it’s a passport to the world of work, where their skills help them secure excellent jobs in the IT industry, or in information-based careers like management, journalism and marketing.
In the Year One course you will study modules such as fundamentals of IT and global information. Students will be able to study the First Year Certificate as an AS equivalent course. If you choose to go on to study the Year Two course you will cover Cyber Security, Product Development and Systems Analysis & Design. The course is very practically based with lots of use of computing technology. You’ll become a high-level user of industry-standard software packages, such as Google Apps for Education and develop advanced business-related IT skills.
The entry requirements to an A Level and/or A Level Equivalent is five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Mathematics.
All Year One modules are exambased. For Year Two, you’ll do one exam and two projects.
Students from this course can progress into the world of employment within the IT industry, but more commonly move on to university to study a related degree such as internet technology, geographical information systems, IT & society, ICT with Qualified Teacher Status (primary teaching), information systems management and IT organisations. Students also frequently combine IT with business or management in their degree course. Others use the expertise gained on the course in a variety of different professions, from management and journalism to computing and marketing.
You’ll have the opportunity to attend sessions at the University of Portsmouth’s Technology Conference, covering everything from intergalactic travel to medical databases. You’ll also be encouraged to attend public lectures with a technological focus at the University of Portsmouth and University of Southampton. You’ll also go on trips to places like The Science Museum, Action Stations at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the wartime code-breaking centre at Bletchley Park. You’ll also benefit from our community engagement initiative with Scottish and Southern Electric.
