A Level English Language and Literature at The John of Gaunt School

Course description

We rely on the language choices of a writer to make meaning in what we read. Our language is full of literary features and our literature would collapse without its linguistic frameworks. Are you creative enough and inquisitive enough to become a strong communicator and to harness the knowledge, past, present and future of the power of the written and spoken word, which this course will give you? If you want to become an expert in the study of English as a whole, then this subject is for you.

Course content

English continues to be one of the most popular courses in the Sixth Form. We are pleased to be able to offer the students the choice of studying either English Literature, English Language or English Language and Literature at post-16 level. This means that students are better able to follow their preferences and so their enjoyment of the courses tends to be high.

In 2012 for the seventh year running we can report that all of our students passed English at A level. Nineteen students attained A/B grades and the vast majority of our students matched or exceeded their predicted ALIS grades. Every year students go on to study English related courses at university.
