Applied Business A Level at Lady Manners School

Course description

The vocational focus of this qualification encourages students to develop an understanding of how business works in the real world.

An emphasis is placed on realistic business contexts throughout, students develop an understanding of how various business functions such as marketing, finance, human and physical resources work together, as part of a cohesive business.

Students will be encouraged to take part in practical activities.

This course provides students with the opportunity to apply their business knowledge to realistic business problems in a practical way.

This course is most suited to students who have an interest in exploring the world of business in a practical way.

Course content

The Business Environment

A range of different businesses and their ownership How businesses are organised to achieve their purposes The impact of the economic environment on businesses How political, legal and social factors impact on business

Managing Resources

How human resources are managed The purpose of managing physical and technological resources How to access sources of finance Interpret financial statements.

Introduction to Marketing

The role of marketing in organisations Using marketing research and marketing planning How and why customer groups are targeted Developing a coherent marketing mix.

Management accounting

How costs are determined and used to calculate prices Using break-even analysis Using appropriate statistical information to review and predict business performance Using budgetary techniques.

Recruitment and Selection

The processes involved in recruitment planning The implications of the regulatory framework for the process of recruitment and selection Preparing documentation involved in the selection and recruitment process Participating in a selection interview.

Entry requirements

GCSE or BTEC Business Studies will give a background base to the subject but is not essential. Business Studies requires an ability to work well with numbers and words.


The assessment is made up from a combination of core and mandatory units.

Future opportunities

This course gives students a wide choice of progression options into further study, training or relevant employment in the business sector.

Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move onto degrees, BTEC Higher National Diplomas or Modern Apprenticeships in related subjects
