Professional Cookery Level 1 Diploma & Food & Beverage Service Certificate at Somerset College

Course description

This course is designed to introduce you to working within a professional team. You will develop your skills as a chef and learn skills required to work front-of-house, whilst covering the following areas:

  • Customer care
  • Working within a team
  • Food preparation and production
  • Basic food hygiene certificate

You will also spend four weeks in the workplace at various industry placements. Applicants are highly recommended to seek work in the industry while studying. You will take a Food Hygiene qualification.

Entry requirements

You could seek employment in the industry as a trainee chef or in the food and drink industry. Alternatively you could progress on to an intermediate level Apprenticeship.

Assessment

Assessment will take place in a realistic working environment, the College’s training kitchen and restaurant. There will be demonstrations, theory sessions, practical and portfolio work. There will also be numerous written assignments related to the hospitality industry plus several practical exams.

Future opportunities

You could progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery/Diploma in Food and Beverage Service, subject to a positive reference from the teaching team and successful completion of the full qualification including Functional Skills. 

You could seek employment in the industry as a trainee chef or in the food and drink industry. Alternatively you could progress on to an intermediate level Apprenticeship.
