Theatrical & Media Make-Up VTCT Level 2 Diploma at Macclesfield College

Course description

This course combines practical work with related theory in preparation for cutting, styling hair and colouring hair, eye treatments and make-up for special occasions, fashion/photographic work and body art. Also this course will develop your communication and personal skills which are essential in this type of work.

Course content

During this course you will study the following mandatory and optional units to achieve 37 credits.

Mandatory units totalling 15 credits are taken in:

  • Maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
  • Client care and communication
  • Applying make-up
  • Fashion & photographic make-up
  • Art of dressing hair
  • Creating an image

Optional units:

  • Client consultation
  • Art of colouring hair
  • Cutting women’s hair
  • Applying body art
  • Face painting
  • Eyelash and brow treatments

Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade C or above. If you have achieved a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme.

Entry requirements

For this course you will need to have achieved 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above (or an equivalent vocational qualification) ideally to include English Language.

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Assessment

Assessment will take place within the work place and the College’s Pure Salon . Questions will be asked on each unit to satisfy there is an understanding of the underpinning knowledge. The types of assessment are written assignment, practical observation, written end of unit exam, oral questions and work based learning (60 hours of work experience)

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:

  • Apply to study a Diploma Level 3 in Theatrical and Media Make-up
  • Pursue to a career within Hair and Media industries or 
  • Become a freelance make-up artist 
  • Apply for an Apprenticeship in the industry
