Bench Joinery Apprenticeship Level 2 and Level 3 at Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College

Course description

The course at level 2 will teach you the skills be able to:

  • Set up and operate a circular saw

  • Produce setting out details for bench joinery products

  • Mark out from setting out details for bench joinery products

  • Manufacture bench joinery products These skills will then need to be demonstrated in a commercial environment and assessed by one of our staff in the workplace. You will be informed about the tasks you need to be assessed when you are inducted on the course

Progression onto the level 3 will enable you to be trained in the following skill:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

  • Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work

  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

  • Manufacture shaped doors and frames

  • Manufacture stairs with turns As part of the apprenticeship you will be required to complete Maths, English and in some cases ICT. If you have already done these make sure you inform us at enrolment and induction. These skills will then need to be demonstrated in a commercial environment and assessed by one of our staff. You will be informed about the tasks you need to be assessed when you are inducted on the course

Entry requirements

You are required to be in paid employment, self-employment is not allowed. If you are not working, you can enrol on our full-time programme and seek employment in the future which will allow you to start the apprenticeship at a later date.

Assessment

The technical certificate is tested via an online exam which is taken after a period of training. The practical work is completed after training in core and specific skills to the area you are working in.

The NVQ aspects of the course are completed via on site assessment in the workplace. This is completed via observed work, evidence from witnesses and discussions in relation to knowledge of the construction environment.

Future opportunities

You will be able to work as a bench joiner in a workshop and form doors and windows, as well as curved and straight work. You will be able to complete a wide variety of joints that can to be used in bespoke and commercial based joinery work.

Further information

A normal week would consist of attending classes over a block release basis. This will involve going to work for two weeks and attending college for the third week. This may change so please ask when you enrol.

During each week you will complete:

  • Numeracy and Communication
  • Classroom activities
  • Practical tasks

The minimum length of a level 2 apprenticeship is 18 months but can take up to 2 years maximum. If you are on a Level 3 apprenticeship then this will be an additional one year.

Construction is based at Acton Campus for the training of the technical certificate skills. You will be tested in the knowledge of every unit by an on-line exam after receiving teaching in the required knowledge. Practical work is trained and tested within a workshop after a period of skills training.
