A Level Physical Education at Townsend CofE School

Course description

COURSE CONTENT
The AS course is split into two units;
G451 – An introduction to Physical Education. This includes the theoretical study of anatomy and physiology, acquiring movement skills and socio-cultural studies relating to participation in physical activity.
G452 – Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education. This includes practical performance as a participant, coach or official in two activities, as well as coursework interview where the candidate must critically evaluate a live performance.

The A2 course is also split into two units;
G453 – Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education
G454 – The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education.

LEARNING METHODS AND ASSESSMENT
During lessons students are required to research and present information on a regular basis, using information and communication technology based resources.
AS Theoretical assessment is by written examination.
AS Practical assessment is through performance and interview.
AS 60% theory (1 exam paper), 40 % performance and analysis

Entry requirements

Six or more GCSE grades at A*-C including English Language.
Average GCSE point score 4.7 or above.
Grade C for GCSE Physical Education and Science
However, it is possible to take the course if Physical Education was not taken at GCSE level. Good practical ability and a genuine interest in the subject is essential.
