Geography AS/A2 Level at The Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

 

The OCR specification explores the key principles, concepts and processes that explain geographical phenomena and landscapes. It maintains the balance between physical and human geography, whilst ensuring relevance to the modern world. You cover some topics started at GCSE in more depth and you start some that are totally new. The stretch and challenge activities for each unit will enhance your studies and understanding of the world around you.

AS Year:

Topics in Geography

Managing Physical Environments:

  • Rivers
  • Coasts
  • Cold environments
  • Hot arid and semi-arid environments

Managing change in human environments

  • Managing urban change
  • Managing rural change
  • The energy issue
  • The growth of tourism

ASSESSMENT: In year 12 you have one human and one physical exam paper lasting 1.5 hrs each.

These papers are separated into short answer questions and a longer essay style question. Together worth 50% of the total A level.

 

A2 Year:

Section A Environmental Issues

  • Earth hazards
  • Climatic hazards

Section B Economic Issues

  • Globalisation

 

Entry requirements

 

In order to study Geography at A Level you must have achieved 5 GCSEs A* - C.

In addition, to study this subject you must have achieved Grade C in English Language and English Literature, Maths, Core and Additional Science – the new double science at GCSE.

 

Assessment

2 Exams at end of each year.
