Drama and Theatre Studies AS Level at Southend High School for Girls
There are many career options open to students with a
qualification in Drama. The performing and creative
industries alone offer a vast array of career opportunities
beyond performing. The collaborative nature of Drama
prepares students for an increasingly team oriented
workplace and provides enhanced public speaking skills.
The course demands practical, creative and communication
skills in almost equal measure. Students will extend their
ability to create drama and theatre, choosing either acting
or production roles. The course will involve taking part in
drama productions, as well as studying plays, playwrights
and styles of performance and there will also be 2-3 visits
to the theatre which will be followed by written analysis
to develop critical appreciation of theatre performance.
It is useful to have taken Drama at GCSE Level but not
essential. It is important that students are interested in
gaining a greater understanding of how theatre and plays
work and are keen to be involved with performances.
Students will need to be curious about issues and ideas
and have a creative instinct for communicating views
through drama. Students should also be keen on acting,
writing or on the visual and technical side of theatre with
a desire to develop skills in some or all of these areas.
Students will be given opportunities to participate in a
wide range of extracurricular activities related to Drama
and performance and encouraged to take on leadership
roles within the performing arts at SHSG.
