Sociology is all around you – literally everywhere you look where there are people or have ever been people. Sociology is the academic study of the social world and the people in it. The biggest question Sociologists ask is, ―Why?‖ Why do some people turn to crime and others not? Why does the education system work for some while it doesn‘t for others? Why do some people believe everything they read in the newspapers? Why do a lot of people who are released from prison end up back in there? Why do some people join religious sects or cults? WHY?! So if you have ever wondered, ―Why?‖ when looking at the people around you, then Sociology could well be for you!
Aims of the course
This course offers candidates the opportunity of developing the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods. It is designed to encourage candidates to demonstrate the application of a range of skills and consider the integration of sociological themes:
Socialisation, culture and identity
Social differentiation, power and stratification
Whilst developing their skills of: Evaluation and application of knowledge; Collaborative working; and critical analysis and construction of strong arguments.
Programme of Study
During the course, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Sociological Theories, Methods and real life situations whilst applying the core themes of socialisation, culture, identity and power. You will apply this knowledge in two written examinations.
At this level, candidates will acquire knowledge of contemporary social processes and social changes. Candidates will be encouraged to develop their own social awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world.
Unit 1: Families and Households

At this level, candidates will continue to focus on contemporary society but they should demonstrate a wider range and greater depth of knowledge and understanding and more highly developed skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation.
Unit 3: Beliefs in Society;
Unit 4: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods.
Who is the course aimed at?
Studying Sociology will change the way you look at the world and the people in it. It will enable you to critically evaluate arguments, texts and real life situations, as well as greatly enhance your communication skills – both written and verbal. These skills are highly valued at University and in employment. Sociology could take you into any number of exciting career paths. Careers in journalism, medicine, social work, marketing, law, public relations, teaching – in fact, because Sociology aids your understanding of people, social interaction and the society we live in, knowledge of the subject will aid you in any career which has people in it and involves any type of social interaction!
