Sport and Active Leisure - Higher Diploma at Queensbury School

Course description

Diplomas provide a stimulating and diverse programme of applied learning within the occupational areas of sport, health & fitness, play & youth work, media & event / business management. They are designed to equip young people with the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary within the sport & active leisure industry.

Course content

The Higher Diploma gives a broad, generic introduction to the whole of the sports related industries with an increased focus placed on gaining a greater appreciation of different business functions within sport. Content is based on 3 key themes; Sport & Active Leisure and the individual, Sport & Active Leisure and the Economy and Sport & Active Leisure and the Community.

There are 7 units of study:

  • Positive lifestyle choices and sport and active leisure
  • Encouraging participation in sport & active leisure
  • Science in sport & active leisure
  • Working in the local sport & active leisure industry
  • Businesses in the sport & active leisure industry
  • Media in sport & active leisure
  • Access for all in sport & active leisure
As part of the Diploma you will have lots of opportunity to come into contact with people who are employed in the sports industry. It is therefore expected that learners will be committed to work the hours specific to their chosen sporting experience which may well be above and beyond the normal school day.

Entry requirements

You will need to demonstrate a general interest in the sports industry as a whole. You will also need a recommendation from your school or a suitable reference and will be required to attend an interview. At post 16 a range of D/E grades at GCSE.  


One of the 7 units is assessed via an external exam that consists of a variety of multiple choice and written response style questions. The remaining 6 units are assessed through internally set assignments. These will be broken down into a number of separate tasks and activities. Where possible assessments will be applied in nature and may therefore take place as some form of work experience.

The Diploma is graded A*/A/B/C The Level 2 Higher qualification is equivalent to 7GCSEs at A* - C

% Coursework: 6 of the 7 principle learning units are assessed via a written assignment

% Practical: Some assessment criteria can be covered using practical assessment i.e. out in the work place however please note there is no assessment of practical sporting ability!

Future opportunities

This new course has been developed with relevant employers and universities. It offers progression opportunities for future employment within the health & fitness & sports industry.

The Diploma will provide an excellent base for entry into further education, higher education or employment.

The qualification will provide opportunities for progression onto the next Diploma level (Level 3) along with other general qualifications and further education courses.
