Art and Design BTEC Level 1 Diploma at Southport College

Course description

To introduce students to a range of Art and Design subject areas and to enable students to develop the basic skills and knowledge relevant to these areas, therefore providing a good basis to go on to a more advanced qualification.

Course content

A range of subject areas are investigated, including; - Painting and drawing - Sculpture - 3-Dimensional design - Fine Art - The work of other artists and designers - Printmaking - Textiles. There is a lot of practical work, which is supported by related written work. Literacy, Numeracy and IT skills will also be developed as a part of this course. You will also study Personal and Social Development units as part of the course such as; induction to study and teamwork skills.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade E or a Diploma at Entry Level 3 or equivalent. Satisfactory College assessment in English and maths
Satisfactory reference 

You will also need to show a small portfolio of your artwork at interview.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, based mainly on practical assignments with some written components. All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. Two of the units may be externally assessed.

Financial information

Students are supplied with some basic materials, but will need to purchase various items as the course progresses. The college art shop sells materials at a reasonable cost. Students will also have to pay for any study trips. The tutor will provide details of costs when the course starts.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of the course you may progress on to a related Level 2 course such as L2 Diploma in Art, Design.
